Composed for the 2012 International Handbell Symposium in Liverpool, England, this work is based on the tune LIVERPOOL by John Roberts. Heard throughout is a contrasting motif formed by spelling the word "Liverpool" in musical notes. Several stately treatments of the tune are followed by a toccata-like section in which all ringers are challenged by many fast-moving sixteenth-note runs. The final verse includes lyrics added by Fred Gramann that speak of the various roles played by bells and their power to bring unity. This can be sung by the ringers if desired, or printed for audience participation.
