"Seven Bagatelles" was composed at the request of oboist George Riordan. Although George has considerable experience performing new music, his specialty is Baroque music. Taking a typical Baroque trio sonata instrumentation, I filtered the style through a contemporary lens, creating an unmistakably modern work. Rather than coupling the cello and harpsichord parts, I have treated them independently, and many of the rhythms and harmonies are not commonly found in works of the seventeenth century. The work is in seven movements of contrasting moods.
