Duke Pearson's Heavy Legs is a surprisingly high-energy entry into his catalog as a composer. The opening ensemble riff is a fairly simple dialogue between the horns and piano and rips right along at about 220 bpm. The introductory material pops up one last time before the melody is over to serve as a send off into the first solo. The melody is restated once the solos are over, followed by a vamp and fade over the theme with the piano filling in the gaps. This is pure fun for a small band! Instrumentation: flute, ATB saxes, trumpet, trombone, piano, bass, drums and optional guitar.
