Masquerade Suite comprises five pieces for solo piano: Waltz, Nocturne, Mazurka, Romance and Galop. Originally, Masquerade Suite was composed in 1941 as orchestral incidental music to Lermontov's stage play entitled Masquerade. Khachaturian selected five out of the fourteen pieces constituting the ballet music and put them into his own suite entitled Masquerade Suite as a work orchestrated for double winds. Katsuma Nakajima has transcribed Khachaturian's orchestral music into a piano version while trying not to sacrifice the composer's intent and musicality.
