Refuge
Publisher Desc.
This empowering song by Andrew Bowman is the seventh and final piece in the poetry set by Sara Teasdale entitled "Interlude: Songs Out of Sorrow." Refuge finishes the story told throughout the cycle with the poet reflecting on their misfortunes in life, only to realize that through music, there is freedom for the soul. After the introductory measures, the slow sixteenth note patterns in the accompaniment help move the vocal lines to the crux of the piece: If I can sing, I still am free. From here, a tempo and dynamic change signals the joyful revelation of the poet through the final measures. It is in this last section where singers are challenged by independent vocal lines, woven together through call-and-response patterns until meeting together again at the end. Refuge is a perfect song for teaching dynamic contrast and vocal independence in young singers.
