The work opens with a chorale texture, although rhythmically blurred. A melody emerges, played in octaves in the E-flat clarinet and the bass clarinet. The faster section is more rhythmically direct, yet quirky and often humorous. The work builds to a climax in which the E-flat clarinet soars above the rest of the ensemble in a cascade of sound.
