Souvenir de Porto Rico
Gottschalk was the first American to achieve an international reputation as a composer during his lifetime. Subtitled, March Of The Gibaros, this music is convincingly American, mixing the indigenous rhythms and melodies of North and South America. This music grows in intensity as the "march of peasants" draws near and later, fades away. It's a unique piece by an important figure in American music.
