Symphony No. 5
Mendelssohn completed his "Reformation Symphony" in 1830. The fourth movement is based on the famous Lutheran chorale, A Mighty Fortress is Our God. Its melody is announced first by flute alone. Gradually, the other woodwinds join in, followed by strings and brass. The tempo increases in the main section of the movement, built around various phrases from the chorale. A triumphant proclamation of the chorale concludes the movement. This arrangement retains all the wonderful colors of Mendelssohn's original orchestration while giving your students a chance to learn a wide variety of playing styles and bowings including legato, marcato, and staccato. Playable in first position for strings with some optional shifting for violin 1 and basses.
