Three and One

Thad Jones - Jazz Lines Publications

Harry James, one of the leading trumpeters of the Swing Era, was a big fan of the sound and style of the 1950's Count Basie Orchestra. He hired several of Basie's arrangers to write arrangements for the Hrry James Orchestra in the early 1960's, including Neal Hefti, Ernie Wilkins, and Thad Jones. Many of Thad's contributions were recorded by the James band. These charts beautifully illustrate how Thad had such a unique talent for writing within the established style of other bands, while still managing to instill his own musicality in each piece. Thad Jones' original composition Three and One features guitar and bass on the melody which is followed by an open guitar solo. Following the guitar solo is a fabulous sax soli then a shout chorus that leads back to the guitar and bass stating the melody. Iconic!
