In earlier times small-note values were often used as a paper-saving device, since it was just plain expensive! Here we have the time signature and note values all doubled, for far fewer dots and flags. Add to this the lack of clef changes in the middle of measures, a GateWay Editions standard, and this dramatic collection of scalar and arpeggiated figures, with hand-crossing throughout, becomes much more manageable.
