Welcome to Aotearoa was orginally composed as a fanfare and flourish in 2016 for the Narashino High School Symphonic Winds and massed band of 300 musicians. The work was then re-written in 2018 for the Catholic University of America Wind Ensemble and expanded beyond the fanfare to include a number of sections. The piece takes you on a musical journey around New Zealand and is based on photographs taken by Sean Cole. The first section "Kia Ora" (pronounced kee-ora), means "Hello" and is taken from the original fanfare featuring the brass section. The second section "The Great Lake" (Lake Wakatipu in Queenstown) and this segues at the same tempo into "The Misty Mountains" (Tongariro) in the central North Island. The pace picks up again with "Hobbitses" which takes the listener to Hobbiton in Matamata and finally the main theme is reprised with the "Welcome Fanfare". Aotearoa is the Maori name for New Zealand.
