Three Canticles of Light

(Sacred Poems in Hebrew, Arabic, and Latin)
Larry Lipkis - Larry Lipkis
Publisher Desc.  "Three Canticles of Light" is a setting for two sopranos and piano of three short sacred texts about light from three faith traditions: Judaism, Islam, and Christianity. My intent is to underscore the similarities, rather than differences, between the religions by using some common melodies, harmonies, and contrapuntal ideas in all three settings. While the Hebrew text ("Baruch ha'or b'olam") and Arabic text ("Allahuma Aj'Al Fi Qalbi Nouran") emphasize the holiness of the light within and around us, the Latin text ("Lux Aeternum")--from the Roman Catholic Requiem Mass--reassures us that everlasting light will shine upon us throughout all eternity. The duration of the piece is approximately 6 minutes.
