The Frog Galliard
Publisher Desc.
This piece is a set of variations on a theme by English lutenist and composer John Dowland (1563-1626). I chose to use a consonant style here inspired by instrumental music of the Renaissance, which I have performed and studied. Years ago, when I auditioned on the lute for the New England Conservatoryis Performance of Early Music Department, one comment from the jury on hearing this music was that it made it seem that iAll is right with the world.iThere are several different sixteenth-century settings of this Dowland tune, including those for the song Now O Now I Needs Must Part, for solo lute, and for mixed vocal and instrumental ensembles. iThe Frogi referred to in the title is the name Queen Elizabeth I used to refer to Francis, Duke of Anjou. A galliard is an early European dance form in triple meter where the gentleman was able to display athletic prowess with jumps, hops, and turns.
