The first version of Spring morning, frost. Before others awake, for flute and piano, was created for Arielle DeVito, a talented young flutist and student of Linda White. That iteration was premiered on May 1, 2016, as part of the Cleveland Composers Guild Creativity: Learning through Experience program at The Music Settlement in University Circle in Cleveland, Ohio. This expanded version for flute ensemble was premiered by the Greater Cleveland Flute Society's Erie Waters Flute Ensemble on April 28, 2024 at the Unitarian Universalist Church in Shaker Heights, Ohio.
Spring Morning, Frost. Before Others Awake is a musical depiction of a landscape coming to life, transitioning from the quiet of night to the first light of day. Each flute in the ensemble manages melodic material while also contributing to the overall texture. Instead of a single, continuous melody, the piece features melodic fragments that emerge from and recede into the background, creating a dynamic and immersive soundscape.
