In the Bleak Midwinter

In this setting, a solo cello opens with two extended recitative-like phrases that incorporate fragments of Harold Darke's original melody. Throughout the anthem, the choir, the organ, and the cello interweave themes from Darke's tune and Gustav Holst's CRANHAM setting of Christina Rossetti's cherished text. The result is a fresh and expressive Christmas fusion of the two familiar melodies.
