Old Stomping Grounds

With rhythmic accompaniment and energetic melodic lines, this animated concert band work contains elements of early American barn dances, followed by a calmer section that develops into a moderate jig. After these lighter textures, the frenzied dance theme returns as the piece races to an exciting conclusion. The opening melody is a derivative of an old Irish fiddle tune known by many names, including Listowel Hornpipe. Evoking feelings of nostalgia and familiarity, this unique work is a great exercise in technical development for high school players.
