Composed in July 1776 in Salzburg, this divertimento was traditionally written to celebrate either the name-day or the university graduation of Mozart’s sister, Maria Anna ("Nannerl"). Originally scored for oboe, two horns, two violins, viola, and bass, this string quartet arrangement seamlessly redistributes the bright, conversational wind parts among the strings. It is a lighthearted, 6-movement work filled with French style elements (such as a formal French Ouverture and a pair of elegant minuets) combined with joyful, celebratory Austrian galant phrasing.
