Vigorous rhythmic figures mark the opening of this outstanding concert overture!   The main theme is an interesting mix of vitality and fluidity, as the fanfare-like motives undergo frequent shifts in meter. Using a full scope of sonorities in the concert band, Thurston offers a wonderfully orchestrated selection.  Graceful woodwind choir scoring in the lyric middle section offers a beautiful contrast to the dynamic opening fanfare and powerful conclusion.
