A Love Supreme

(Four Movement Set)
John Coltrane/arr. Wynton Marsalis - Jazz Lines Publications

This new version of A Love Supreme is the first example of Wynton Marsalis's intention of bringing the music of John Coltrane into the repertoire of the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra. Recorded by Coltrane's quartet in 1964 and 1965, it is considered to be Coltrane's greatest work, melding the hard bop sensibilities of his early career with the modal and free jazz styles he later adopted. Marsalis's adaptation for big band includes all four movements beginning with Acknowledgement which relates to influences as far away as Japan in the flute parts and builds on the unity of the minor third and the fourth. The second movement, Resolution, and the third movement, Pursuance, each feature explosive improvisations, as well as virtuosic heat and authority from the brass and reed sections, all riding on a stoked up groove. In Psalm, the last movement, Marsalis chose to build his arrangement on Coltrane's solo which became a composition the moment it was released on record. The stunning conclusion is enlarged to meet the ambitions and standards of the greatest big bands. Instrumentation: 5 Saxophones (with doubles), 4 Trumpets, 3 Trombones, Piano, Bass and Drums. Duration: ca. 41 minutes. Each movement is also available separately.
