For this composition I wanted to explore a different culture... I decided to set up a scene based on the fictional acheonyeo gwisina or "virgin ghost." The legend speaks of a traditional young woman raised for service to their father, husband, and son(s) but ultimately the young woman faces an untimely death that prevents her from accomplishing their preparation and training. Because this gwisin (or ghost) did not accomplish their mission in life, their soul remains on earth. It is very typical to see Korean Ghost tales in a macabre setting with a spooky dead maiden: with a ghoulish face, darkened eyes, and long draping black hair. While there is no attributable source for the origin of the tale, many cultures use ghost legends/tales to scare children (or entertain children) into certain behaviors. It is my belief that this ghost tale may have been invented to teach children to stay indoors during dangerous late hours when wild animals prey on the small. This story takes a different turn then the typical scary setting: the hope of the acheonyeo gwisina is answered with a wedding, wedding reception, and eventual completion of her purpose (as she fades into the moon setting). This gives me the opportunity to paint an exotic tale. The piece is written exclusively for the right hand, and progresses through five movements. I hope you enjoy telling this story through the piano!
