In 820 Louis the Pious, Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire heard Theodulph
of Orleans singing his hymn while under house arrest. Louis was so inspired
by the hymn that he released Theodulph. In 1603 Melchoir Teschner set the
hymn tune to new lyrics. J. S. Bach created the harmonization that is
commonly used. John Mason Neale translated it into English.
You will receive the Score plus separate parts. The piano part is also
playable on organ or pedal harp. The harp part is clearly marked for lever
and pedal changes. Lever harpists will play the glissando in the fourth verse
diatonically.
