Bar Chimes sound by stroking across the row of rods with hand or stick. The individual bars randomly concuss and produce a shimmering ringing sound. Originating in the late 1970's the Bar Chime is know for it's glissando atmospheric effect in film and popular music. However they have recently found a valued use with Orff Instruments in the music classroom.
