Crashing Waters from on High
One of the 15 songs in Brahms' Neue Liebeslieder (New Love Songs), a collection of Romantic pieces originally conceived for four solo voices and piano four hands, but from the beginning they were often performed by a larger chamber ensemble. The texts of the songs are adapted from folk songs of various areas or Europe. This movement, while rich harmonically, is bombastic in nature, illustrating musically the crashing and surging of the waters.
