Curious Surroundings was written as a way to represent the local folklore of the mysterious North Carolina mountains. The piece comprises three varying sections, each inspired by an infamous ghost story: The Phantom Choir of Roan Mountain; The Brown Mountain Lights from Wiseman’s View and The Demon Dog of Valle Crucis. The piece also incorporates antiphonal playing with a portion of the ensemble behind the audience.
