Orchestral in nature, An American Elegy was written in tribute to the American spirit in the aftermath of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. It features written trumpet, flute and clarinet solos and requires sensitive playing by the entire band. As recorded by Gordon Goodwin's Big Phat Band on The Phat Pack album, this is an emotional and stirring work. Alto saxes double on flute; tenor sax I doubles on bass clarinet; trumpets II, III and IV double on flugelhorn; acoustic guitar (nylon); acoustic bass.
