Fascinating Rhythm

George Gershwin/arr. Nelson Riddle - Jazz Lines Publications

This arrangement by Nelson Riddle was recorded in 1959 by Ella Fitzgerald for her Gershwin Songbook three-album set. The arrangement opens with a vocal/bass duet (with drums on brushes). The ensemble slowly enters and eventually builds to the exciting shout section that features a few 2-bar unaccompanied drum fills. Things quiet down for the vocal re-entry and then build again as the brass shout out the countermelody. After the brass have their final say the bottom drops out leaving a trio of flutes with string and bass accompaniment to play a variation on the melody. Instrumentation: 2 Alto Saxes (Alto 2 doubles Flute), 2 Tenor Saxes (both double Flute); Baritone Sax, 4 Trumpets, 4 Trombones, 3 Violins, Viola, Cello, Optional Harp, Guitar, Piano, Bass, and Drums. Included is an optional synthesizer part that may be used in place of the strings, or the string parts can be omitted altogether and the chart will play fine. This publication is based on the original Nelson Riddle score and is not a transcription. Vocal Key: Ab
