Words of comfort from Psalm 136 are set to joyful, lilting music. Unison and two-part writing alternate with full SATB, all supported by the lively piano part. As in the psalm itself, the words of the title return throughout as a powerful refrain: "O give thanks unto the God of heav'n for his mercy endureth forever."
