Michael Haydn composed his four Sonatas for Violin and Viola in 1783, commissioned by the Salzburg archbishop. Six sonatas were actually requested, but due to Haydn's illness, his friend Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart helped him complete the missing two. While both sonatas by Mozart become widely popular, these four compositions by Haydn nearly fell into oblivion, but are made available again with this edition.
