A gentle instrumental introduction, in which we hear the sparrow's song (flute or violin), transports us to a place of comfort in this setting of Jonathan Cook's text: "God of the sparrow, sing through us songs of deliverance, songs of peace." Opening with women's voices on stanza one and men's voices on stanza two, it transitions through a gentle chorus of four-part alleluias to an impassioned plea for mercy, sung by divisi voices. Then it gradually falls away to a final, profound amen. An artistic choice for Lent or any time of year.
