Great Women Composers, Clara Wieck Schumann
Clara Wieck Schumann (1819-1896) born in Frankfurt, Germany. Clara was considered the most distinguished pianist of the Romantic era. She had a touring concert career that lasted 61 years. Her innovations to the piano recital format and repertoire were profound in her time and are still felt today. A wonderful composer in her own right she spent much of her career advancing the music of her husband Robert Schumann who suffered an early death. Clara had a huge impact on budding composers like Johannas Brahms and Edward MacDowell. Few composers missed the opportunity to meet this great matriarch of classical music. Her career and life are worthy of time and study. Poster made from an original painting by Al Moretti.
