I have always been a big fan of John Williams music and I wanted to write couple of pieces that reflects Johns style. There have been some pieces that I wrote for orchestra then made a transcription for band. This one is solely for the symphonic band.
This composition contains the following techniques that the music educator can teach their students: short Woodwind runs, accidentals, trills, dovetailing technique, slightly extended range in most of the parts, musical nuances as presented in the middle section, dotted rhythms, triplets, Invented scales, and some octatonic scale features. The Major-minor 7b5 chords is prominent in the first and last sections of the piece. Most of the band has the melody at some point or another. The middle section is where the woodwinds can shine the most. The brass and percussion are featured bookends. This piece sounds very film score like which students tend to like because of something familiar that they might have heard in a movie somewhere, the students get to play a full range of dynamics, it is attainable within 2-3 weeks of playing but still has plenty of meat to chew on for an extended study period. This would be a great opening or closing number to a concert or as an assessment piece.
