Iguana is an elementary piano solo with lyrics and is in the Noah’s Ark Series of piano solos by Lynne Cox. This series focuses on global music emphasizing different styles in music. As with all solos in the Noah’s Ark Series, on the back are listed facts about the animal and locale as well as the theory in the piece. Iguana is a FUN tango naturally syncopated in the key of Dm. Form: intro AAB coda with B section in subdominant key of Gm—VERY dramatic! The left hand plays ostinato in typical tango style while the right hand carries the melody in mostly single notes, with occasional additional harmony to ease the student into playing polyphony. Sassy tongue-in-cheek lyrics of a vegetarian iguana with an attitude! As with all songs in this series, there are enough facts in the lyrics and on the back of the sheet music for the student to write a report for school. Think of the A+ and the interest of fellow classmates when the student carries his portable keyboard to school and performs this as part of his report - not to mention the pride and self-confidence the student develops! This piece invites (interactive) improvisational addition of percussive instruments such as maracas, castanets, rain sticks, and drums, whether stacking on an electronic keyboard or actually physically handing out the percussive instruments to friends. This piece is easy to dance to, being in Latin rhythm.
