Imperial Valley Serenade
Publisher Desc.
Mitch Sturman, director of the Wilson Junior High School ''Warrior'' Band in El Centro, CA, commissioned me to write this piece for his 8th Annual ''Concert of Premieres'' in May, 2015. As the Imperial Valley is in the West, he wanted a hint of a ''western'' feel, hence, the clip-clop introduction and accompaniment for the first theme. He also wanted a slight big band or pop sound, in his words ''kind of like from the movie 'Sun Valley Serenade' with the Sonja Henie and Glen Miller Orchestra in the 40s.'' For that I added a blue note or two and a ''ratta-ta-tatta-ta-tat'' percussion in the second part. The trumpet soloist was a seventh grader, who did an admirable job at the premiere. The work can also be played with other solo instruments: flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, alto sax, tenor sax, French horn, baritone horn (BC or TC), trombone, or tuba. Contact me if you wish to see the arrangement for one of these instruments as soloist.
