Indiana
Originally arranged by Gerry Mulligan during his brief stay with the Gene Krupa Band in 1946, this chart features a straight-ahead rhythmic intro, with the first chorus dominated by call and response between the reeds and brass. A magnificent three-measure sax section Baroque injection sets up the brass to close out the chorus. Then follows solo space for trumpet and tenor, followed by an eight-measure modulation driven by solo trombone leading to trombone and piano solos. A rousing 16-measure shout rounds out the chart. This chart not only delivers a lot of power and punch, but also serves as a vehicle to showcase an array of soloists.
