This movement is excerpted from "The Passion of Our Lord According to St. John" (2017). Showcasing Christina Rossetti's text "A Better Resurrection", this setting features women's voices representing the songs of mourning in the life of Christ. The soprano solo (using the Rossetti text) portrays the grief of Mary Magdalene, while the mezzo-soprano solo (using the lullaby "Lullay, Mine Liking", as popularized by Holst) presents the sorrow of the Virgin Mary. The chorus of women (SA) represent the wailing of the women at the Slaughter of the Innocents. The solo parts are of moderate difficulty, while the choral parts are straightforward and easy. Set with solo flute and piano accompaniment, this work can be the dramatic focus of Good Friday service.
