The Marimba Duet in F Lydian contains only those notes that are in the F Lydian scale, which is an F major scale with a raised 4th degree (FGABCDE). The Lydian scale is one of the seven ecclesiastical or church modes (the others being Ionian, Dorian, Phrygian, Mixolydian, Aeolian, and Locrian). Examples of compositions in the Lydian mode include the theme from Back to the Future by Alan Silvestri, Yoda's Theme in Empire Strikes Back and Flying Theme from E.T.: The Extra-terrestrial, both by John Williams, as well as the theme from The Simpson's which Danny Elfman composed in 1989. In 1825, Beethoven (1770-1827) subtitled the third movement of his String Quartet No. 15 (Op. 132) the "Holy Song of Thanksgiving of a Convalescent to the Deity, in the Lydian Mode."
