Night
Night was one of ten pieces commissioned by the Oriana Women's Choir in Toronto and their former director William Brown to celebrate the poetry of Toronto elementary and secondary school students. This SA composition (with only two bars of alto divisi) is certainly manageable for treble-voiced choirs of all ages. However, a word of caution: sensitivity to word painting and colour is important. Also, singers will encounter a few rhythmic challenges - but certainly nothing insurmountable! Changing meters are used solely to assist in proper syllabic accenting. I have tried to maintain a sense of child-like innocence and awe in my music to compliment Hilary Illkay's evocative and intimate poem. Please note: the provided audio is of the original version (2007). In 2017 there were some alterations made to help with the flow of both the vocal and piano parts.
