Oh, Fateful River!
Publisher Desc.
Oh, Fateful River! is a tribute to Illinois and to the Mississippi River, which flows south along its western border. It also refers to that river in the sky, the Milky Way, and to the discovery of the planet Pluto, that celestial body discovered in 1930 in the Kuiper Belt by native Illinoisan Clyde Tombaugh (1906-1997). In the guise of a calliope sounding from a paddle wheeler steaming down the Mississippi, Oh, Fateful River! also salutes John Philip Sousa, The March King (1854-1932). He served as a lieutenant commander of the Naval Reserve Band in Illinois during World War I. The carnival-like atmosphere of this march for brass quintet praises the accomplishments scientific and musical of these two famous men, of their bygone era, and the steadfast, fateful river that joined them all together. Dutch Robb et al. is the pen name of Robert J. Con, a former band director and journalist. He self-publishes both music and prose on Amazon and My Score and lives in his hometown, Kewanee, Illinois.
