Passacaglia in C Minor
Written for a special concert with the "Monterey Next Generation Jazz Orchestra" and tenor saxophone soloist Joe Lovano. The arrangement was commissioned by The Monterey Next Generation Jazz Festival and the Carmel Bach Festival. Bach's ground bass was used as the primary motive for this arrangement and one of the melodic variations from the original organ work is re-harmonized and set in a modern jazz context for the tenor soloist. Moving the traditional meter of the passacaglia from three into four and setting the melody into a Kenton ballad style allows the tenor soloist to really stretch on some beautiful changes backed by lush chords and countermelodies. The chart is set in a way that your first tenor sax player can leave out the tenor 1 part and play the solo part with no negative impact on the arrangement. Bari doubles on an optional, brief bass clarinet part. The top note for lead trumpet is a written high D, and the top note for lead trombone is a written high B-flat. 5 saxes, 5 trumpets, 5 trombones and rhythm section.
