Pleiades

"Time" charts have been a staple of jazz music since the days of Dave Brubeck, Johnny Richards, and Hank Levy. This chart is written in 7/4 time with a consistent 4+3 subdivision of the measure throughout. The melody is presented by a frontline trio of tenor, trumpet, and guitar, with written or improvised solos for tenor and trumpet. A stop-time section gives the drummer and optional Latin percussionist a chance to solo, and then the full ensemble takes it out - but not before a final statement by the soloists. Rhythms, chord structure, tempo, and key are kept simple to aid in learning this style. The lead trumpet plays up to a high B-flat.
