This arrangement of the first of Shostakovich's 24 Preludes and Fugues is
the result of a request from my friend Robert Bluestone.
The Prelude, with a repeating rhythmic figure, is reminiscent of a Baroque
Sarabande, yet full of chromatic 20th century harmonies.
The Fugue's principal theme occurs 11 times throughout the piece
and is stated on every scale tone in the key of 'C.' Shostakovich also
manages to never employ an accidental throughout; the original piano version
is entirely on the white keys.
A unique addition to the concert repertoire.
