Set the Stage
These combo books provide a comprehensive method for starting a jazz ensemble in a variety of small group settings. Three-part arrangements in a variety of jazz styles with soli and solo sections create the feel of playing in a full jazz ensemble. First, second and third part books are available for an assortment of wind instruments, so all you have to do is make sure you have all three parts covered. Each book includes two CDs designed specifically for wind or rhythm section instruments: one for demonstration and one for practice and accompaniment for each instrument. Improvisation suggestions and playable chord changes make soloing possible for students having basic instrumental skills with the wind instrument books containing optional written solos that may also be used as improvisational studies. The rhythm section books focus on teaching players to interpret and perform jazz styles using lead sheets and lead sheet type arrangements. Complete guidelines in the rhythm books include skills necessary for players to function effectively in a rhythm section. This method/collection "sets the stage" for establishing and developing a jazz program. The eight tunes and the instruction provided prepare students for ensemble playing and improvisation, establishing a foundation in the fundamentals of both combo and jazz ensemble settings. Highly recommended!
