The piece has several different moods depending on the mode used in the movement. This work is intended to be used as both a warm up for flute quartets and as a performed piece.
Movement I. Minor: A fast-paced, slightly spooky work that has a fugue-like beginning.
Movement II. Mixolydian: A dance-like work in 6/8.
Movement III. Phrygian: A slow, thick-textured piece in an off-putting mode
Movement IV. Locrian: A limping, crunchy, quick work in 7/8 with a steady bassline
Movement V. Lydian: A bright piece with a fugue-like beginning
Movement VI. Dorian: A dark, steady work in 9/8 with a mournful, moving melody
Movement VII. Major: A march with several moving parts. The longest movement at 2.5 minutes
