Shoulder Room is an up tempo hard swing groove work that alternates with a second line New Orleans street beat feel, and is a very contemporary, unpredictable and hard blowing chart. It features trumpet and trombone with modal solos, and drums. The solos have long arcs supported by colorful and contrapuntal background lines that emerge to take over in episodic shout choruses. Wolking wrote this while recovering from shoulder surgery, and it definitely has its spiky moments. The composer rates it as an advanced, high-energy, concert performance work. Instrumentation: 5 Saxes with Flute on Alto 1, Clarinet on Alto 2 and Tenor 2, 4 Trumpets with Flugelhorn double on 4th, 4 Trombones, Guitar, Piano, Bass, and Drums. Trumpet 1 goes to written high D.
