Side Effects May Include Swinging
This chart is totally different! It swings hard in 4/4 and the harmony is based on the chromatic scale. The tune is in no particular key with the soloists thinking chromatic also. The melody never locks into a key but it should be swinging at all times. A band that can grab the "modern" swinging concept can pull this off very effectively. The style and feel really have to come from the rhythm section. Pianists should check out McCoy Tyner and Herbie Hancock for comping while drummers should investigate Elvin Jones and Tony Williams. Soloing in this concept can be aided by keeping a few tips in mind: 1.) Don't stay in one key too long. 2.) Think shape and rhythm of your line as being the priority, and 3.) Always keep it swinging!
