Solemn Thought is a nineteenth-century American tune using only the tones of the pentatonic scale. This practice is frequently observed in tunes of the shaped-note tradition. The solo instrument performs the tune, as it was composed, with some octave adjustments and just slight embellishment. The piano accompaniment, however, has been amended to enlarge the harmonic palette and provide a sense of animation suggested by strongly worded lyrics, when sung.
