As the title states, the Step By Step Piano Course introduces the piano by presenting new concepts gradually and ever so clearly, one step at a time. Book One takes several pages to present the group of 2 black keys and middle C on the keyboard and on the grand staff. The student reads from the grand staff immediately, playing lovely four-measure tunes in middle C position. Only middle C, D and B are played for several pages, one note at a time, and gradually the other notes of middle C position are introduced as well as a few harmony notes in the alternate hand. Middle C position is the only position offered in Book One. Fun, clearly presented, and child-oriented theory pages are interspersed to support and reinforce new concepts. Books Two through Six take students from the elementary to the intermediate level in similar, step-by-step fashion. All the tunes offered are originals by Ms. Burnam and are often, but not always, in standard middle C position and C, G, F or D Major positions with level-appropriate changes of positions included. Sweet, innocent drawings are found throughout the series.
