Pianist, composer, and arranger Toshiko Akiyoshi leads what is considered to be one of the finest 16-piece big bands in jazz in this full-length concert DVD. The band sizzles masterfully and serves up an individual sound while continuing to swing, maintaining a traditional big band feel. From the western bebop of pianist Bud Powell, to eastern folk music structures of Japan and the creativity of the band's principle soloist, saxophone/flutist Lew Tabackin, these various musical influences blend into a rich texture, creating an originality to the renowned Toshiko Akiyoshi Jazz Orchestra.
