The hymn is based on a poem by Charles Wesley; the fourth stanza of the poem are Aitken's words as he crafts Wesley's poem into something that is very specific to the commissioning church's occasion. An SAB setting plus optional brass provides versatility for smaller churches without compromising the integrity of the piece.
