The Theme and Variations, Op. 23, is one of several solo works Verroust composed for the English Horn. An extensive Introduction in G minor leads to the sixteen-measure theme in G major. The first and second variations are preceded by a four-measure "bridge." Verroust does not change the tonal center of the three variations but provides added interest by expanding the final bridge to seven measures. The third variation lasts the expected sixteen measures but takes the performers into a slower seven-measure section. This, in turn, leads into a nineteen-measure coda that brings the piece to a bravura conclusion.
